Congratulations to Ferguson Elementary

Congratulations to Ferguson Elementary School, CCCC’s first recipient of the "Campus in the Spotlight" award. The Ferguson Running Club meets in the mornings before school for fun & fitness. Applications to join the club are sent home to all families and students with dates and times the club meets. A Kick-Off breakfast is held and the students determine what their destina-tion goal will be - such as Disneyland. The miles to get to their destination are calculated and a chart is made to show their continued progress toward their goal of running enough accumulated miles to reach Disneyland. Each time a student, or adult, completes a mile, they are given a rubber band for their wrist. At the end of each run the students mileage is calculated by their rubber bands and spread-sheets are kept to record each runners progress as well as combined mileage for the group. Incentives are awarded throughout the program to encourage the student success and participation. The club ends with an Awards Breakfast, and students are given participation ribbons as well as awards for most miles, most improved runner, best team spirit etc...

Shop CPSC Toy Safety Tips
Before Shopping for Holiday Gifts

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The holidays are here and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has its list. Parents and gift buyers are encouraged to check it twice. Today, CPSC issued its annual holiday safety messages, joined by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Safe Kids Worldwide, to remind parents to be diligent when making holiday shopping choices.
“CPSC, CBP and industry activity has been with one goal in mind, to keep the toys our children play with the safest in the world” said Acting Chairman Nancy Nord. “Vigorous inspection of toys, testing and law enforcement have made toys the safest this season.”
For 2007, the Commission has reports of 18 toy-related deaths and CPSC staff estimates that there were about 170,100 hospital emergency-room treated toy-related injuries to children under 15. Most of the deaths were associated with airway obstruction from small toys, drowning, or motor vehicle accidents during play. Most of the injuries were lacerations, contusion and abrasions; the head and face was the area most frequently affected.
The top 5 toy hazards:

  • Scooters and other Riding Toys – Riding toys, skateboards and in-line skates go fast and falls could be deadly. Helmets and safety gear should be worn at all times and be sized to fit.
  • Small Balls and other Toys with Small Parts – For children younger than age three, avoid toys with small parts, which can cause choking.
  • Balloons - Children under eight yrs. can choke or suffocate on un-inflated or broken balloons. Keep un-inflated balloons from children. Discard broken balloons at once.
  • Magnets – For children under age six, avoid building or play sets with small magnets. If magnets or pieces with magnets are swallowed, serious injuries and/or death can occur.
  • Chargers and Adapters – Charging batteries should be supervised by adults. Chargers and adapters can pose thermal burn hazards to children.

Once the gifts are open:

  • Immediately discard plastic wrappings on toys before they become dangerous play things.
  • Keep toys appropriate for older children away from younger siblings.
  • Pay attention to instructions and warnings on battery chargers. Some chargers lack any device to prevent overcharging.

With the increased popularity of second-hand stores and on-line vendors, gift-givers should be especially vigilant to prevent the sale or purchase of hazardous products that have been recalled, banned or do not meet current safety standards. Before placing products in the second-hand market, check its recall status at www.cpsc.gov. Buyers should make sure their gifts do not include any of the recalled toys or children's products on CPSC's web site.
Also, at this web site, consumers can keep up-to-date on dangerous products by signing up to have recall announcements sent directly to their email account. Choose to receive all recall announcements or children's product recalls only. Consumers also can call CPSC's toll-free hotline at (800) 638-CPSC. For information about all types of recalls, visit www.recalls.gov

“Campus in the Spotlight”

Has your PTA Unit accomplished something great at your Campus?  Do you think other schools might benefit from this “something”?  Are you willing to share your successes?

If you have started a new program, improved an old one, had a wonderful guest speaker, parent, and/or student workshop; then we would love to share your ideas with others so that they can try them at their campus.  We are, after all, working toward the same goal and there is no greater compliment than copying someone else’s great idea.

The Clear Creek Community Council would like to applaud our Local PTAs who encourage and support their board members; who want to try something new; who shake things up a bit, and take chances. With change often come wonderful new programs, and we can reach out to more parents and students in the process.

To encourage these innovative people and to applaud the PTA Boards and Campuses that allow them to flourish, we have started a new program called “Campus in the Spotlight”.  We will not only recognize these individuals and thank them, but also recognize the group effort that goes behind any great idea.  First, a person has to approach you with a plan and be willing to carry it out.  Your PTA President, PTA Board, and School Principal have to approve and support this idea, and with any luck, you have the support of a committee and friends to help.  Lastly, you need the support and participation of your staff, students and parents to achieve success. Without any one of these support groups, great ideas will simply fade away!

If you have a program you would like to submit for this honor, please look up the “Campus in the Spotlight” For Entry Forms Click Here or contact Sue Ferguson for more details at s f16522@earthlink.net or 281-488-3942.

All entries will be judged and a winner announced at each CCCC Regular Meeting. This winning idea will be presented at the meeting by the person who came up with the idea, and they will include contact information if you would like to try their idea on your campus.

At our May meeting we will award an overall winner for best idea of the year! We will also compile all of the ideas we have received for the year and list them on our website in brief, but will include the contact person if you would like further details. Just because it was not chosen as a winner does not mean that this could not be the perfect idea YOUR campus is looking for!

Please, let us help you share your ideas; let us applaud your Unit and your campus for the creativity and support.  Together, we can improve the lives of our students, one campus at a time, by sharing our success stories.
